Awareness Program in Uper Dumro Village of Birbhum District

CFEL team headed by Chairperson Prof. Manju Rani Singh visited Uper Dumro village of Birbhum district in West Bengal for linguistic awareness program in the Oraon community with Mr.Nimai Sardar a community leader. The program was organized under the banner of Sara Bharat Oraon Kalyan Samity and coordinated by Mr. Tapan Mudi. The program was started with a welcome procession with folk dance by villagers including worship of the goddess of the village (gramin devi). Meantime, there was a program for cleaning the hands and feet of the guests and applying oil, so that outsiders may enter into the program with freshness and contamination free. There were exhibition spots to show the cultural features of Oraon community in the program. There was a community school for entry-level education and students were learning Kurukh alphabet through Tolong Siki alphabet. CFEL team encouraged the community for their practices and emphasized on their language and culture and also appealed to the society to have education in Kurukh language in order to avoid endearment of the language. The calendars prepared by CFEL, V.B. having Kurukh alphabet in Tolong Siki script were distributed among the students. CFEL team honored the students with towels also. Many folk dances and songs were sung at the event by the cultural team of the community people. The program was managed by the volunteers of the community and participated by more than 28 villages across the West Bengal state.
