Field Work
Centre visited Purulia district of West Bengal with the aim of collecting and documenting linguistic and cultural aspects of Birhors from 13.02.2022 to 27.02.2022.
The name Birhor, also known as haunting tribe, refers to both the tribe and the language, categorized under the proto-australoid group of race. Birhor is an isolated and scattered tribe who loves to stay in Forests. Birhors in Purulia depend on forests and its resources. Because of the felicitous environment for their residents, geographically some parts of Purulia, which are divided into three blocks, i.e., Jhalda, Balarampur and Baghmundi, is an appropriate place for them. First week of our survey we visited two villages, Bhupatipally and Bareriya village of Baghmundi block and the last week we visited two villages Bersa village of Balarampur block and Muhultar village (Chotobakad area) of Jhalda blocks.
We, successfully, collected linguistic and as well as cultural aspects of the tribe in Purulia district of West Bengal.
